The month of Halloween has our imagination and taste buds tingling. There are so many possibilities, it was difficult to narrow them down! After walking through our garden, there was one plant that stood out.
This amazing plant has red veins pulsing through its bright green leaves and it is called Bloody Dock. This plant is a member of the Sorrel family and has a wonderfully crisp, lemony acidity that can give quite a bite! The leaves are hand harvested and dried naturally, then added to the still with our four key botanicals – lead by Juniper then the supporting acts of Coriander, Winter Savory and Angelica Root.
The Bloody Dock is high in vitamin A and C, Iron and Potassium – it is herbily used as an antiseptic and astringent. A decoction of the leaves can be used externally for healing cuts, burns and rashes. It is a beautiful plant and will seed happily around your garden making it the perfect choice for any at-home blood tonic.
Once Mark, our master distiller, completed the distillation, we decided to continue the Halloween theme by infusing the gin with black violets and black hollyhocks. Both these spooky, mysterious dark coloured flowers give the gin the most beautiful dark maroon colour which magically turns pink when you add your tonic.
Who needs a cauldron when you have an abundance of magical plants surrounding us here at the Secret Garden Distillery.
